A Prayer for the Pope

As an Episcopalian, I do not strictly believe in papal authority. I do, however, believe in the church universal—the single body of all Christians, and I cannot discount the work of Pope John Paul II in his pursuit of, teaching of, and advocacy for the principle and practice of God’s Word, and his efforts to make peace among Christians and throughout the world.

As of this writing, the Pope is reported by several sources to have died. If you feel so inclined, please join me in this prayer to God for the Pope, for the Catholic Church, and for the catholic church1.

A Prayer for Pope John Paul II

Dear God, thank you for the gifts you have given the world, particularly the gift of those among us whom you have, by Your Holy Spirit, so moved to Your service that they set for us an example of how to live in the service of Jesus Christ and in the footsteps of His apostles.

I particularly thank you on this, the day of his death, for Your servant Pope John Paul II, and for sending him and his fellow ministers of Your Word to serve as an example of godliness and devotion.

I pray that he, being free of his worldly ailments, may live every bit as fully and vibrantly in heaven as he has on earth, and that his successors and contemporaries who remain on earth may, even in his absence, continue to be moved to and by your service and the enthusiastic and unceasing discipleship of the worldwide Church.

United in spirit despite our temporal divisions, I join thousands of other Christians today to pray to you for the soul of Pope John Paul II, and for the fate of the church in his absence.

In the name of Your son our Lord,
Amen.

1 No, I did not repeat “Catholic Church” by accident. See the entry for “catholic” at Peek Through the Window for an explanation.
